Keter Studio is an independent art, technology, and culture production space founded in Hemşin, a small mountain town in northeastern Turkey surrounded by the lush forests of the Black Sea. In the local language, "keter" [keˈtɛʁ] means engaging in an activity or keeping oneself busy without any obligation or expectation of benefit. For us, this word is the starting point of both our creative practice and our relationship with the place.

This approach is not only an artistic choice but also a stance shaped by sustainability, community-based production, and opposition to unrestrained growth. Inspired by the principles of degrowth, we see production not as an activity centered on speed, efficiency, and capital, but as a way of building relationships, repairing, slowing down, and coexisting. In the face of crises such as the depletion of natural resources, cultural homogenization, and the abandonment of rural areas, we propose a small-scale production model that is connected to place and mindful of collective memory. At Keter Studio, art is not only an object—it is process, connection, and resilience.

Keter Studio is a workshop and thinking space that supports multidisciplinary productions ranging from mixed-media installations to robotics projects, from sculpture to code-based narratives. We offer extensive technical facilities, including 3D printers, CNC machines, laser cutters, woodworking equipment, airbrush systems, and Arduino and Raspberry Pi modules, while also providing space for production methods that use acrylics, spray paint, and natural materials.

But Keter is not merely a technical studio; it is also a research-driven initiative aimed at engaging with local culture, documenting and transforming the disappearing Hemşince language, its stories, and its everyday practices. With its isolated location, low population, and powerful nature, Hemşin is both a timeless source of inspiration and a valuable critique of the present.

As a space that brings together local knowledge and contemporary technology, Keter Studio aims to be an open production platform for artists, researchers, artisans, and the curious. We build slow futures—rooted rather than temporary, careful rather than fast, and from within rather than from outside. In this spirit, through short- and long-term residency programs that host artists from different disciplines, we turn the space into a shared arena for thinking, making, and learning together.
